With media attention fluttering around Broadway’s debut of the new musical FELA!, co-produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith, the spotlight on afrobeat music has never been brighter. This is good news for Chicago Afrobeat Project who, after celebrating its 7th year on the music scene, returns to Minneapolis for one pulsating night of deep-beat dance and funk.
2009 was a landmark year for Chicago Afrobeat Project, and 2010 is bound to be no different. The group just snagged another Chicago Music Award in the Best African Artist category for the second year in a row (2009, 2010). In 2009, they released an EP titled “Off the Grid” (CAbP Music), and toured non-stop coast-to-coast throughout 2009. Known for their blazing live shows, the band blends pulsating funk, aggressive jazz, and rock elements into an explosive stage performance that is growingly classified as “American Afrobeat.”
