We knew things were getting recession-y when the department stores’ holiday displays had gifts wrapped in newspaper. In today’s economy, there has been a lot of talk about staycations: a way to have fun without breaking the bank. And with more new programs and great shows in our 21st season, what better place for a staycation than The Cedar? This idea inspired our current fundraising campaign, Cedar Staycation, which helps you to enjoy affordable entertainment, keeps The Cedar alive during a precarious time, and subsequently helps ensure the arts remain strong in our community.
The Cedar’s 20th season opened in September of 2008 with an event schedule more diverse and robust than ever, new programs, a new sound system, and a renovated marquee. But like many organizations, we faced a challenging 2009: Foundations’ assets are down due to the recent recession, and many have pulled their arts funding. This means we can no longer count on the charitable funding that has subsidized our budget in previous years. We are instead dependent on support from donors like you to maintain our positive growth, continue to present dynamic programming, and survive the economic downturn. Supporting The Cedar demonstrates that live music in the Twin Cities is important to you.

We know that the economy is affecting more than just our organization and is also upsetting individuals and families. We want you to be able to enjoy quality and affordable entertainment, which is why we’re making it easier for you to experience diverse and innovative concert performances: a donation of $50 or more will make you a Staycationer, which means you are eligible for 2-for-1 ticket prices at the door on select concert events, including those listed above.
Cedar Staycation supports The Cedar’s annual fund, which is crucial to ensure that we can continue our programming and operations: About one-third of our budget comes from charitable contributions. The Cedar branded its annual fund “Made of Cedar” to demonstrate that The Cedar is not just a building, a venue, or an organization. The Cedar is a community. Keeping with this theme, our annual fund campaigns feature community members whose lives have been positively affected by the organization. We ask donors to show they are “Made of Cedar” by making a donation every year.
