Shows coming up over the next month
Summer has traditionally been a slow time at The Cedar, as we take a breather to enjoy the sun and the great outdoors. This summer, however, we are taking a more active role with some summer-themed programming, including our first venture to take advantage of our wonderful patio area with the inaugural Cedar Outdoors series (see below). We are also opening our doors to a couple of festivals, kicking off this weekend with screenings of two great blues films in the Deep Blues Film Festival (Jun 28) and another showing of blues films on Jul 12, and a series of films in the Bicycle Film Festival (Jul 10 and 11). All this on mid-summer nights? No, not a dream!
We still have three big concerts in our regular concert programming. Vieux Farka Toure (7.30pm tonight Jun 25) has big shoes to fill as the son of the late, great Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure, but as his second album Fondo shows, Vieux is clearly unafraid to not only mine the rich heritage of his father, but also is willing to step out into new territory with rock, reggae and dub, and Delta blues influences. The Guardian calls the album "A dazzling piece of work." JUST ADDED TO THE BILL: Belgian indie duo Soy Un Caballo have won the attention and collaborations with Bonnie Prince Billy and Conor Oberst. They'll perform a 30 minute opening set. DJ Brad Wrolstad will also spin some tunes preceding the show. Sponsored by 90.3 and 106.7 KFAI. Standing room only; limited seating available.
I never cease to be heartened by the generosity of our local musicians. Not known to be earning six-figure salaries themselves, they are often the first to step forward to donate their time to a good cause. This Saturday's performance by Charlie Parr, Dave Simonett (of Trampled by Turtles) and Jistoray (8pm Sat Jun 27) is a great example. Proceeds go to TheHungerSite.com in support of their campaign to feed the hungry and help end world hunger through peace and anti-poverty initiatives. Sponsored by 90.3 and 106.7 KFAI.
Power-pop quartet Fountains of Wayne (8pm Tues Jul 7) had a big hit with their song Stacy's Mom, but after 14 years together, they have built up a large string of great songs in their repertoire; they are also reportedly working on a new album. Get tickets while you can for this sure to sell out acoustic offering, supported by opener Jon Auer (The Posies). Sponsored by 89.3 The Current

Global Roots Festival 2009
Block out some time now on your fall calendars! The Cedar presents the 2009 Global Roots Festival, September 24-27. Expanding upon its ten year run of Nordic Roots Festivals, this annual event will now encompass performers from all over the world, each with their own unique take on their "local" music. Global Roots music is not necessarily what most people easily identify as "world music." Conventions of rock, hip hop, jazz, and music from many cultures are blended. Barriers are crossed both geographically and stylistically. Like our previous focus with Nordic Roots, the presentation is decidedly contemporary, but the roots go back centuries. Stay tuned for more information on ticket on-sale date, and festival passes.
STAYcation at The Cedar
The economic downturn has caused many to declare 2009 a staycation year, and The Cedar is coming to the rescue! Like many of us, maybe you can’t afford a vacation, but perhaps you can join us at The Cedar for a STAYcation. The Cedar faces a challenging 2009 due to drastic cuts in funding from private and corporate foundations whose assets have declined. The Cedar depends on your support in order to maintain this positive growth and survive the current economy.
Make a donation of $50, become a Staycationer and get 2-for-1 admission on select concert events!
The Staycation campaign helps you enjoy affordable entertainment, and keeps the Cedar alive during a precarious time. Donate to the campaign and learn more at thecedar.org/donate.
